A Study on the Protection of Animals used for viewing - Focusing on ¡®Wild Animals in Circuses Bill¡¯ in the UK -
Jung So-Young

Abstract
Most people feel the sadness and anger, when watching the news about the animal abuse. Recently, news related to the zoo or animal performances often reported. They used excessive violence to animals and did not properly take care of animals in the training process. In Korea, while public zoo is treated as a park, private zoo is handled as a museum. So, the management of the animals in the zoo is very insufficient. The animal cruelty is a crime in the animal protection law, but it is difficult to prove the animal abuse that occurs in the training process. And although the animal protection law has some provisions for the appropriate care for the animals, there are no provisions for penalties. In addition, we don¡¯t have any law to regulate zoos and animal shows. In 2013, NARS(National Assembly Research Service) reported that legislation is needed to regulate zoos. And ¡®Act on the establishment and operation of zoos¡¯ is under examination in National Assembly. This paper introduces discussions of banning the use of wild animals in circus and ¡®Wild Animals in Circuses Bill¡¯ in the UK. The situation in the UK with advanced animal protection law, would be a reference to the legislation in Korea.
